Gujarat occupies an area of 196,024 sq km and accounts for 6.19% of the total area of the country. As per provisional data of latest census 2011, Gujarat’s latest figure of population is 6.03 crore with 19.17% population growth. The Gujarat State at present comprises of 33 districts, sub-divided into 249 talukas, having 18,618 villages and 242 towns.
The Literacy rate in Gujarat has gone up to 79.31% in 2011 as compared to 69.14% in 2001. Of that, male literacy stands at 87.23% while female literacy is at 70.73%.
On formation of Gujarat state on 1st may, 1960, a department named Education and labour department came into existence. Social welfare, labour, prohibition, excise and employment were included in Education department. Latter subjects were gradually taken away from education and Labour Department on administrative grounds. Since August, 1976 Education department came into existence as separate secretariat department, which looks after education including primary education, continuous education, literacy education, secondary education, higher education, technical education, pharmacy education. In 2009 MID DAY MEAL is separated from primary education.
o   To prevent classroom hunger and promote school participation thereby enhance enrolment, retention and attendance; foster social equality and gender equity and simultaneously improve nutritional levels among children.
o   Through the Mid Day Meal Scheme, the Government of Gujarat is helping underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for. The meal is an incentive for them to continue their education. It helps reduce the dropout rate to an enormous extent and increases classroom attendance.3
